THE TRUTH ABOUT A TABOO SUBJECT: NUCLEAR POWER
Nov. 21 Clean Energy Exposition, “Meltdown” Film, Panel Discussion

Date: November 21, 2009
Time: 4:00 – 10:00 PM
Place: Unitarian Society of Hartford, 50 Bloomfield Ave., Hartford, CT
Sponsor: PACE (People’s Action for Clean Energy)
Event: Exhibits: environmental organizations and green companies; clean energy installers; “Meltdown” film; food; awards; panel discussion with experts

This event, which is free and open to the public, will expose one of the most taboo subjects of our time – nuclear energy. It is a rare opportunity to learn the truth about the dangers of nuclear power; discuss this taboo subject with experts; learn the facts, the cost and the issues; and help make Connecticut safer and healthier.

The realistic and riveting FX Channel film “Meltdown,” depicting nuclear power, nuclear weapons and depleted uranium, will be shown beginning at 4:00 pm,

From 5:00 to 7:00 pm, environmental organizations and companies will exhibit benign solutions to climate change such as solar, geothermal and wind technologies. Clean energy installers will also be on hand. Vegetarian pizza, non-alcoholic beverages and desserts will be available for a small charge.

The 7:00 program will begin with a brief PACE annual meeting, followed by awards to outstanding environmental and legislative leaders. A panel of experts will then present facts about the ramifications of the nuclear power industry, including the inextricable link between domestic power and military weapons. The distinguished panelists are the director of Three Mile Island Alert, (www.tmia.com) and the staff of Beyond Nuclear, (www.beyondnuclear.org). Questions from the audience will be encouraged.

The presentation will include little-known facts such as routine emissions of cancer-causing isotopes into the air, land and water; unworkable evacuation plans; reactor leaks; personal protection items; impact on DNA; unprotected fuel rod storage; insufficient protection against terrorism; inability to help climate change; unsolved waste problems; prohibitive taxpayer costs; extension of plants’ licenses; and uranium mining dangers.

For more information, go to www.pace-cleanenergy.org or call 860 693 4813.

Starting at 7:15 p.m., Lifetime Achievement awards will be presented to Eric Epstein, of Three Mile Island Alert, and to the staff of Beyond Nuclear. Their brave and long-standing efforts are critical to the health and safety of U.S. citizens.

Legislative awards will be presented to Rep. Sean Williams (R), Watertown, and Rep. Vickie Nardello (D), Prospect, for their outstanding leadership during the last legislative session on clean energy legislation. As committed, dedicated and tireless advocates of safe energy, their hard work helped the State House of Representatives to unanimously support safe energy. In addition, "Rising Sun" awards will be presented to new legislators Rep. Lonnie Reed (D), Branford, Rep. Matthew Lesser(D), Middletown, and Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D),Cheshire, for their critical and effective support of this issue.

Christopher Phelps, of Environment Connecticut, will receive an organization award and Adam Ney, of Buildingctgreen.com, will receive a business/media award. A special award will be presented to Avon Old Farms School in memory of Michael Stradley for the installation of solar panels on its ice rink, the largest operating solar array of any private school in New England.

Teaching the Teachers

CCEF has begun an ambitious effort to train teachers in solar energy education. Cities and towns that have committed to 20% clean energy by 2010 are eligible to send up to two teachers to workshops focused on solar energy education at the 9th grade level.

The Learning for Clean Energy Innovation (LCEI) initiative started with a group of eight volunteer science teachers in Glastonbury, Milford, and West Hartford and is gradually being rolled out to other cities and towns. The ultimate goal is to use monitoring software linked to solar panels on schools and other buildings to collect operating data for students to analyze. Lessons will link together energy conservation, electricity, and solar energy.

The solar energy lessons are aligned with the Connecticut Core Science Curriculum Framework and will serve as alternative lessons for the Energy Transformations module of the 9th grade standards. The Solar Education Unit was developed with the support of the Department of Education, a working group consisting of experts from the education field in Connecticut, and an education consultant.

The Next Workshop Training

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund would like to invite science teachers working with the 9th grade science frameworks to participate in one of two scheduled professional development workshops this fall. Each workshop offers training and materials in addition to Continuing Education Units (CEU's) for all participants. Complete solar tool kits are available for teachers from 20% by 2010 communities. The LCEI program is a test pilot program and space is limited to one hundred teachers.

The schedule for Fall 2009 workshops is being developed. Please check back for more information.

China is doing more to tackle climate change than it gets credit for According to a new report from the World Resources Institute, China is on track to meet its main climate change target, which is a 20 percent reduction in energy intensity by the end of next year.

Michael von Bülow 30/10/2009 09:05
In spite of all its polluting factories and coal-fired power plants, China might be better than its reputation climate-wise, New Scientist reports.

A new report from the World Resources Institute (WRI), a respected environmental think tank based in Washington DC, tells that the country is doing more to tackle climate change than it gets credit for. In fact, its environmental standards exceed those of the United States in some key areas.

"China is making substantial progress in controlling its emissions of climate gases," says Deborah Seligsohn, author of the report.

According to the WRI study, China is on track to meet its main climate change target, which is a 20 percent reduction in energy intensity – the amount of energy used per US dollar of gross domestic product – by the end of next year. This would put a brake on the growth of the country's carbon dioxide emissions.

China is also making good progress towards its goal of generating 15 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020, according to the report. By the end of the next decade the country will have 150 gigawatts of wind power installed – over five times the current US level.

One in 10 Chinese homes already have solar heaters, with the number growing by 20 percent each year.

Coal-fired power plants are also more efficient in China than in the US. The thermal efficiency of US stations – the fraction of heat turned into electrical energy – settled at just under 33 percent in the early 1960s. The efficiency of China's plants has been rising steadily and now exceeds 35 percent.

5 States Spend More on Prisons Than on Higher Education, Report Says

While one of its findings made more headlines — that about one out of every 100 U.S. adults is behind bars — a recently released report from the Pew Center on the States also shows that increases in states’ corrections budgets are far surpassing those for higher education.

From 1987 to 2007, the amount that states spent on corrections increased 127 percent, more than six times the 21-percent increase that states directed to higher education over the same period, according to the report.

The report also showed that for the first time, five states spend more on corrections than they do on higher education. Those states are Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, Oregon, and Vermont. However, the average state spends about 65 percent more on higher education than on corrections. —JJ Hermes

A Victory For America's Small Businesses - America's Job Generators. Have you heard the great news? Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that he is sending a health care reform bill to the full Senate with a robust public option!

Chris Dodd for Connecticut

Dear Friend,

Have you heard the great news? Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that he is sending a health care reform bill to the full Senate with a robust public option.

This is a huge victory for us. It came after days of negotiations, where I joined Senator Reid, Senator Max Baucus, and others. Every day I walked into those negotiations, I knew that I wasn't speaking for myself alone. I was speaking for you and for everyone who shares our belief that real reform of our health care system must include an effective public option that keeps insurance companies honest.

Your support, including the powerful personal stories many of you have shared with me, made it possible for me to move these negotiations in a positive direction. You had a direct hand in the victory that put the public option in this bill, and you should be very proud.

I am extremely optimistic that a health care reform bill with a public option will make it to President Obama's desk for his signature. But make no mistake -- this fight is not over yet.

Our opponents -- including corporate health care interests and virtually all of the Republicans in Congress -- will do everything they can to stand in the way of health care reform. If they are successful, we won't have a public option in the bill. They'd prefer it if we didn't have any reform at all!

I will be calling on you again in this fight. I will need your support, just as I did at that negotiating table. And with your help, I know we will succeed in passing reform that ensures every American has quality, affordable health care.

Congratulations on this great victory, and thank you for everything.

Sincerely,

Chris

JOHN McCAIN -- TOP RECIPIENT OF TELECOM CASH -- UNVEILS BILL TO BLOCK NET NEUTRALITY, progress@americanprogressaction.org

UNDER THE RADAR

TECHNOLOGY -- JOHN McCAIN -- TOP RECIPIENT OF TELECOM CASH -- UNVEILS BILL TO BLOCK NET NEUTRALITY: On Thursday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) thrust himself into the technology issues debate by introducing the "Internet Freedom Act." The legislation would prohibit the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from making sure that Internet service providers don't create a pay-for-play system where they could selectively block or slow content and applications. "This government takeover of the Internet will stifle innovation, in turn slowing our economic turnaround and further depressing an already anemic job market," read McCain's press release. "Outside of health care, the technology industry is the nation's fastest growing job market. ... Just this month, Google and Yahoo both released positive earnings reports." It's ironic that McCain cited Google and Yahoo as examples of why net neutrality rules need to be blocked given the fact that both companies have said that without such measures, the "longstanding openness of the Internet" will be threatened. However, telecoms largely support blocking net neutrality rules, and McCain is a long-time friend of these businesses. McCain was the top recipient of campaign contributions from the telecom industry in the past two years, taking in $894,379. Even as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee from 1997 to 2001 and again from 2003 to 2005, McCain made sure to craft technology rules that benefited his campaign donors. He opposed a program designed to provide discounts to schools and libraries to connect to the Internet and supported large telecom mergers. McCain is an unlikely point person for technology policy. Just last year, called himself a computer "illiterate who has to rely on my wife for all of the assistance that I can get." In July 2008, he said he has "never felt the particular need to e-mail."

Forests a big focus at Governors' Global Climate Summit 2

Buzz up!

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he'd be back to co-host the second Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles, this past week he addressed the group again saying this reprise will be better than most movie sequels ("except for mine," added the Governator). US governors gathered with international governors from Canada, Mexico, Indonesia, Brazil, Nigeria, and The Philippines, from Tuesday September 29-October 3. Also present were Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the EPA, Energy Department representatives, a delegation from the UN, and a host of others trying to gather steam leading up to COP15. One of the themes: don't leave out forest.

The other theme: listen up. Though these type of events are often about speeches reiterating the alarming problems and bragging about commitments to change, Schwarzenegger plans to attend COP15 to speak on behalf of the "subnationals" with findings from this summit, praising the grassroots efforts of regional governments creating a green revolution. Ticking off the list of actions taken since last year, he included India's installation of billion solar lights to replace kerosene lamps in rural communities.

The confab opened with Harrison Ford addressing the crowd, showing Conservation International's Teamwork video, asking for all to "Get off our butts and get in the game" to save the forests, which doesn't require a huge R&D investment, like hybrid vehicles. In the webcast opening ceremony the UN's Olav Kjørven, Assistant Secretary-General said they were meeting to "Ramp it up" for COP15, so lots of dazzling facts, figures and announcements ensued during the opening ceremonies.

More than 200 speakers addressed the conference, ranging from former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, primatologist Jane Goodall, and Hot, Flat and Crowded author Thomas Friedman, along with diplomats, executives, NGOs, and academics to cover an agenda ranging from water and oceans to forests and green jobs. Titles of panel sessions included "Moving Goods with Less Carbon" and "Breaking the Deadlock." With all the networking that happens at conferences, partnerships will create connections to achieve the officially stated goal: to expand and strengthen "cooperative efforts...in support of, the next global agreement on climate change."

An assortment of luminaries attended the Governors’ Global Climate Summit earlier this month, ranging from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Tony Blair to Harrison Ford. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s very own Kevin Hussey (pictured) was there to preview our Eyes on the Earth interactive tool.

“When we come together and work as a team, we can achieve the seemingly impossible.” So began the Governors’ Global Climate Summit (GGCS), held in Los Angeles at the beginning of this month, on a hopeful note.

Billed as a stepping stone to the U.N. climate treaty talks in Copenhagen this December, the GGCS brought a variety of movers and shakers together: governors from regions and states all over the world, U.N. officials, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Jane Goodall (the world’s foremost authority on chimpanzees and an avid conservationist), to name but a few. It was the second time California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had co-hosted the event, having promised to return last year with his signature line “I’ll be back”.

As Gary Gero, president of Climate Action Reserve, said at the meeting, “Subnational governments are the ones that are going to be ultimately responsible for implementing much of what gets negotiated at the discussions in Copenhagen. We have to make sure that their voice is heard.”

Lisa Jackson, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), agreed: “For too many years, states, cities and towns concerned about climate change have had to go it alone — typically without federal partnership, and sometimes with aggressive federal opposition.” That’s why she announced in her speech on the opening day of the summit that the EPA would be moving forward on its own with a new proposal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with or without stronger climate legislation from Congress and the Senate. It plans to use the Clean Air Act to regulate the emissions of facilities that produce more than 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year and to ensure that they adopt the most efficient technologies when they are built or upgraded.

While mitigating (trying to minimize) climate change is crucial, Dr. Stephen Schneider of Stanford University explained that for most countries it will be a case of adaptation, not mitigation. “The primary victims [of climate change] are those who did the least to cause the damage.”

Water issues were top of the agenda. Rick Miles, minister of the environment of New Brunswick, Canada, put it this way: “Climate mitigation is all about energy. Climate adaptation is all about water.” Sea level rise is a major concern for both small island states.....

* ReConnstruction Center (CT)
* SWIX Waste Xchange (FL)
* Massachusetts Material Trader
* EcoStar Exchange (MA)
* North Carolina C&D Material Trader (website being developed)
* New York C&D Material Trader (website being developed)

Through the project, NERC has provided the participant Exchanges with up-to-date and secure individual websites which can easily be networked. iWasteNot Systems is providing the technical resources for this project. We are in the process of designing the Reuse Marketplace website; when this is completed the individual Exchanges will be networked, and beta testing of the site and search tool will begin.

For more information, contact Mary Ann Remolador, NERC’s Assistant Director.
