Meet at UU at 8:45 AM, to carpool, we will depart promptly at 9 AM.

Hello MTI Folks:

This Friday and Saturday, November 4th and 5th, MTI is donating trees to the Milford Cemetery Association. The intent is to downsize our outgrown nursery inventory and help them establish a natural woodland screening of the Smith-Craft Property being built on Prospect street. This is a win-win for everyone involved and thank you Kate Orecchio and Stephen Wing for coordinating this project.

Tomorrow, Friday, I am meeting Ray Scholl, the Super of the cemetery at 9am at the nursery to help them boom trees on to their truck and flatbed them over to the nursery. Fortunately they are going to do the heavy lifting. There are upwards of twenty+ trees going to them so this will be a repeated activity at the nursery. MTI needs volunteers to help locate trees, place and install tree as well as just good ground people to help cut balls and pots loose, backfill and water. Again much of the heavy lifting will be done by Cemetery personnel and we are collaborators.

Most of Friday will be spent dropping off and placing and Saturday will be spent doing a lot of planting. The weather looks great for both days. If you have any questions, please contact me or Kate for more info. You can meet at the cemetery anytime, enter off Prospect Street next to the DAR building and its behind the Smith-Craft apartments under construction along the train tracks. Look forward to seeing you there.

Students Accept Sikorsky Engineering Challenge

Five student teams compete to design an engine mount for historic,
official state aircraft

Rocky Hill, Conn., October 28, 2011 – The official kickoff for an engineering competition, the Sikorsky STEM Challenge, sponsored by Sikorsky Innovations and supported by Connecticut Corsair and Connecticut Innovations, took place this afternoon at Chester Airport in Chester, Conn.

The Sikorsky STEM Challenge kickoff brought together approximately 50 Connecticut high school science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students and teachers, as well as 17 industry partners. At the event, students from the five participating Connecticut high schools – Amity Regional High School (Woodbridge), Bethel High School, Crosby High School (Waterbury), East Haven High School, and Kennedy High School (Waterbury) – learned about the engineering design challenge in which they would participate during the school year. They have been challenged to help restore an engine mount for the historic, official state aircraft of Connecticut, the F4U-4 Corsair, a single-engine, World War II-era fighter/fighter-bomber. Student teams will work to restore the engine mount using original drawings and specifications along with state-of-the-art design and analysis tools.

The challenge culminates with presentations by the competing teams to a panel of judges from industry and academia. The winning solution, to be named in May 2012, will be provided to Connecticut companies for manufacture and integration into the aircraft.

“The STEM Challenge is a journey into the multi-faceted world of modern engineering,” said Bill Harris, Sikorsky Innovations STEM program manager. “Guided by our mentor team and industry partners, the students will be challenged to think and innovate with purpose. They will derive requirements, conduct trades to meet those requirements, develop and refine a solution, and defend their work through a series of gates in a competitive setting.” Harris added, “This journey represents the real world of engineering today. It’s exciting and never gets old. We anticipate that this experience will encourage students to continue their STEM education and pursue a career at Sikorsky or other Connecticut high technology companies.”

The event is designed to support STEM education and workforce development by creating an opportunity for students to apply their classroom learning and innovative thinking to real-life technical challenges faced by engineers.

“The F4U-4 Corsair is significant to this challenge in that, historically, it is the only military aircraft to ever be completely designed and built in one state... Connecticut, thanks to the combined efforts of the World War II-era UTC companies,” said Craig McBurney, president, Connecticut Corsair. “An important part of Connecticut Corsair's mission is to educate future generations about the Corsair and its contributions on both local and world stages, as well as to inspire students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through its restoration. We're proud to partner with Sikorsky and Connecticut Innovations to offer a real-life project that allows students to hone their skills.”

Through the Sikorsky STEM Challenge, Sikorsky and the other participating businesses are encouraging students to pursue engineering careers in Connecticut and helping to ready them for careers in STEM fields. The other businesses participating in the challenge include: Bolton Works of East Hartford, CAPINC of Meriden, DC Hall Rental Services of North Branford, Hotseat Chassis of Terryville, InterPRO of Deep River, Joining Technologies of East Granby, Lynn Welding of Newington, Mastercam of Tolland, Sirois Tools of Berlin, Trumpf of Farmington, Tumbleweed Transportation of Moodus, Tygor Laboratories of Milford, and Yarde Metals of Southington, as well as MSC Software of Santa Ana, Calif., Project Lead the Way of Clifton Park, N.Y., SolidWorks of Concord, Mass., and usingsolidworks.com of Alberta, Canada.

At the event, students enjoyed operating a Cessna 172 airplane flight simulator and were able to view many of the airplane parts of the F4U-4 Corsair, which were present in the airplane hangar.

“This is a story of grassroots workforce development at its best,” said Deb Santy, director, Connecticut SBIR Office, Connecticut Innovations. “It’s the story of a large business – and several related smaller businesses – working with high school students to inspire and prepare them for careers in engineering. Needing fresh, new talent, all of these businesses have an incentive to cultivate and attract Connecticut’s brightest and most creative young minds to future local career opportunities.”

Announcing a new
Whitney Aeromodeling Club

Beginning Friday night October 21st, and continuing thereafter every first
and third Friday night of the month, the Whitney Aeromodeling Club
will meet from 7 to 9 pm at the Eli Whitney Museum to share expertise
and experience.

Build and fly free-flight models, powered by hand, by catapult, or by
twisted rubber. Beginning to Advanced projects will be tailored to the
student's level. Traditional designs will start the beginner off and more
advanced modelers will help teach traditional skills.

Parents and children will work together on the models with the guidance
of EWM staff experienced in aeromodeling. The first night you come,
you'll build an AMA Cub, a tissue paper and balsa rubberband powered plane.
And then you'll test it before you leave.

The cost of the Cub is $2. The Museum provides the tools and the teaching
and of course, the ambiance. Returning participants will be asked to
become a Member of the Eli Whitney Museum community if they are not
already Members. The cost of membership for a family is $45/year.
Materials costs for the model kits will vary with the kit's level of
sophistication and complication.

The Museum will send out reminders of the meetings during the week
prior to the date scheduled.

According to Roosevelt’s principal speechwriter Judge Clinton Sorrel, he first used "fireside chats" in 1929 during his first term as Governor of New York. Roosevelt faced a conservative Republican legislature so during each legislative session he would occasionally address the citizens of New York directly. He appealed to them for help getting his agenda passed. Letters would pour in following each of these "chats," which helped pressure legislators to pass measures Roosevelt had proposed. He began making the informal addresses as President on March 12, 1933, during the Great Depression.[1] However, according to Russell D. Buhite and David W. Levy, in their introduction to FDR's Fireside Chats, "The term 'Fireside Chat' was not coined by Roosevelt, but by Harry Butcher of CBS, who used the two words in a network press release before the speech of May 7, 1933. The term was quickly adopted by press and public, and the president himself later used it."[2]

Sometimes beginning his talks with "Good evening, friends", Roosevelt urged listeners to have faith in the banks and to support his New Deal measures. The "fireside chats" were considered enormously successful and attracted more listeners than the most popular radio shows during the "Golden Age of Radio." Roosevelt continued his broadcasts into the 1940s, as Americans turned their attention to World War II.[3] Roosevelt's first fireside chat was March 12, 1933, which marked the beginning of a series of 30 radio broadcasts to the American people reassuring them the nation was going to recover and shared his hopes and plans for the country. The chats ranged from fifteen to forty-five minutes and eighty percent of the words used were in the one thousand most commonly used words in the English dictionary.[4]

Every US President since Roosevelt has delivered a regular address. Presidents Ronald Reagan through George W. Bush delivered weekly Saturday radio broadcasts, while President Barack Obama introduced providing his address in both audio and video forms, both of which are available online via whitehouse.gov and YouTube.[5] It has long become customary for the President's Weekly Radio Address to be followed an hour later (on the radio) by a 'response' (not always a topical response) by a member of the opposing political party. The respondent from the opposing party changes weekly, while the President is the same for the entirety of their term. Occasionally the Vice President may deliver the address in the absence of the President.

Silver has long been recognized as a prophylactic/antibiotic. Catholic parishes began using silver chalices to prevent disease transmission between parishioners in the 1300's, and pioneers of the American West had a tradition of placing a silver dollar in a jug of milk to keep it fresh without refrigeration.

Silver kills many strains of pathogens, including fungi, flu viruses, and bacteria resistant to other antibiotics. Unlike organic antimicrobials, silver is thermally stable, functions effectively in almost any environment and lasts significantly longer. As well as killing pathogens, silver has an antiinflammatory effect, enhances wound healing, and is particularly effective at eliminating biologically-induced odors.
Benefits of nanotechnology

Nanotechnology offers two primary benefits to the antimicrobial application of silver. First, adjustment of particle size and shape allows the user to control the antimicrobial activity, duration of activity of the material, and to some extent, material cost. For example, the large aspect ratio of a Blue Nano silver nanowire gives it a 16X greater exposed surface area than a silver sphere of the same mass. This means that our wires create much greater antimicrobial functionality than similar-sized nanoparticles for a given amount of material.

Second, the unique structural properties of nanomaterials allow for them to be configured in a flat sheet, preventing dispersion (sloughing) into open wounds or other sensitive areas. Comparative studies have consistently shown that silver nanomaterials have higher antibacterial potency than free silver ions, and randomized clinical trials have shown that silver nanomaterials allow faster regeneration of the outer layer of skin of burn victims than silver sulfadiazine. Silver nanoparticles do not cause rashes and other hypersensitivity reactions sometimes associated with silver sulfadiazines.

Current applications of silver nanomaterials as antimicrobials include coatings for:

antibacterial soaps
water filters
disinfectant sprays
air conditioning and heating units
hospital face masks
hospital floor tile
surgical instruments and trays
wound dressings

Blue Nano silver nanomaterials are what is termed a "low ion release" variety of silver; meaning that they dissolve slowly in water relative to other types of silver. Our silver is therefore well-suited to applications requiring long-lasting antimicrobial characteristics and/or water-based cleaning.

Akerlund, the industry’s leading stylist and costume designer, Benjamin Males and Associates designed, built and installed the lighting system for Fergie’s stage costume. Electroluminescent wires were animated in time to the music using a micro controller based system equipped with a wireless controlled trigger that was activated off-stage.

The project was carried out for Philips Lighting under the directorship of the lighting designer Rogier van der Heide.

Our ECC Sustainable Inventor’s Club members will be invited to attended lectures. We will invite guest presenters to speak on a variety of topics and teach workshops. Our guests speakers will include: industrial designers, “Lean” consultants, inventors, energy consultants, scientists, grant writers, engineers, biologists, successful inventors, dentists, geologists, marketers, patent attorneys, business leaders - reinventing yourself, chemists, prototype builders, Robert Orr – “New Urbanism,” City Planners, forestry professionals, farmers, etc. We will also teach each other, working as teams or by presenting reports.

A. Get ready to examine existing products and greenstorm ways to improve them.

B. Learn Lean Principals and

C. Learn to manage your creativity and develop the tools and discipline necessary to solve real world problems.

Funding for Farm Conservation Programs at Risk

Please take a moment to call Senators Lieberman and Blumenthal and ask them to support farm conservation programs, including the Farm and Ranchlands Protection Program and Grasslands Reserve Programs, which are critically important to conservation in Connecticut!

A broad coalition of conservation groups is asking their members to call their U.S. Senators today, Tuesday, June 28th, to ask them to restore cuts in farm conservation programs made by the House.

Please join others and call today.

The agriculture appropriations bill just passed by the House of Representatives dramatically slashes funding for conservation, including major cuts in the Farm and Ranchland Protection Program and the Grasslands Reserve Program. These cuts are a double whammy, in that cuts now affect the budget baseline available for conservation programs in the next farm bill.

The House-passed bill cuts farm bill conservation funding by $1 billion for Fiscal Year 2012. This comes on top of $500 million in cuts in the fiscal year 2011 bill. These cuts target crucial and effective programs that are already oversubscribed with a long waiting list of farmers wanting for conservation funding.

The only place these cuts can be changed is the Senate.

Yes, the Congress needs to rein in federal expenditures - but conservation and natural resources spending is only 1.2 percent of federal spending, and has grown less than 3% over the past 30 years!

Please call both your Senators Tuesday, June 28th and ask them to reject the House's cuts to farm conservation programs!

(NaturalNews) A new book by leading cancer expert, Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, skewers the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society and blames the organizations for America losing the war against cancer.

In the book, "National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society: Criminal Indifference to Cancer Prevention and Conflicts of Interest," Epstein argues that the NCI and ACS have spent tens of billions of taxpayer and charity dollars focusing on treatment to the exclusion of prevention, which has allowed cancer rates to skyrocket, with the disease now affecting nearly one in two men and more than one in three women. Furthermore, the author claims that not only do numerous conflicts of interest exist within the NCI and ACS, but the NCI and ACS are also withholding a mass of information on avoidable causes of cancer.

Epstein, who has served as a consultant for the U.S. Senate Committee on Public Works, is an internationally recognized authority on avoidable causes of cancer, particularly carcinogen exposure through conduits such as food, air, water, household products, cosmetics, prescription drugs or industrial carcinogens in the workplace.

Epstein is professor emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Illinois School of Public Health and chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition. He has published more than 270-peer reviewed articles and 20 books, including the prize-winning 1978 The Politics of Cancer, and has appeared on national media, including NPR, 60 Minutes, Face the Nation, Meet the Press, The McNeil/Lehrer News Hour, Good Morning America and The Today Show. He was a key expert in the banning of hazardous products including DDT, chlordane and aldrin. In his new book, he is now the leading critic of the cancer establishment for its indifference to prevention of the disease, which, for the ACS, he claims, borders on hostility.

Cancer funding skyrockets along with cancer rates, followed by exaggerated claims of progress

The cancer industry has made a series of misleading claims about the advances in the war against cancer over the past three decades, wrote Epstein.

Some of the false claims, according to Epstein, include the industry's 1984 announcement by the NCI that cancer mortality would be halved by 2000, the 1998 NCI and ACS Report Card announcement of a reversal in the almost twenty-year trend of increasing cancer incidence and death, and the 2003 pledge by NCI Director and former ACS president-elect Andrew von Eschenbach to "eliminate suffering and death from cancer by 2015."

The NCI, ACS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also claimed that "considerable progress has been made in reducing the [number of people with cancer] in the U.S. population" in its 2003 "Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2000."

The claim, however, is not consistent with NCI's own data, Epstein said, which shows the overall number of people with cancer and incidence rates actually increased by 18 percent. The data also shows a dramatic increase in nonsmoking-related cancers, according to Epstein, including a 104 percent increase in liver cancer, an 88 percent increase in prostate cancer, a 54 percent increase in thyroid and testicular cancer, a 29 percent increase in breast cancer and a 14 percent increase in brain cancer. Epstein also notes the overall cancer mortality rates have remained unchanged and have increase by 6 percent for blacks.

It seems that the more we spend on cancer, the more cancer we get, Epstein said, because while the number of people with cancer goes up, so does the NCI budget paid for by tax payers and charity. The NCI budget has increased 25-fold, from $220 million to $4.6 billion, between 1971 and 2000.

Prevention is the key

The fixation on "damage control" instead of prevention is the root cause of the booming cancer rates in the face of billions of dollars aimed at elimination of the disease, according to Epstein.

He claims the NCI priorities are all wrong. The opening statement of the NCI's 2001 Cancer Facts report says that "cancer prevention is a major component and current priority -- to reduce suffering and death from cancer." Meanwhile the report claimed that only 12 percent of the NCI's then $3.75 billion budget was allocated to prevention.

Epstein shows that the actual attention to prevention is probably even less, by citing an analysis of a 1992 NCI budget showing that less than 2.5 percent of its then $2 billion budget was spent on prevention.

Epstein further crucifies NCI stating that prevention tactics defined by NCI only covered the value of avoiding smoking and a bad diet, while wholly ignoring the myriad of environmental and occupational carcinogens.

NCI & ACS withholding a mass of cancer prevention information

The NCI has failed to inform the public of published scientific information on a wide range of avoidable causes of multiple cancers, Epstein said.

According to Epstein, there are three major categories of avoidable causes including:

1. Environmental contaminants in air, water, soil, the workplace, and food;

2. Carcinogenic ingredients in consumer products, particularly pesticides;

3. Carcinogenic prescription drugs and high-dose diagnostic radiation, particularly pediatric CAT scans.

Epstein wrote, "NCI's silence on cancer prevention is in flagrant violation of the 1971 National Cancer Act's specific charge to disseminate cancer information to the public. This silence is in further violation of the 1988 Amendments to the National Cancer Program, which called for an expanded and intensified research program for the prevention of cancer caused by occupational or environmental exposure to carcinogens."

Epstein blamed this NCI failure to inform Congress and regulatory agencies of avoidable carcinogens for encouraging petrochemical and other industries to continue manufacturing products containing carcinogens and encouraging corporate polluters to continue polluting.

NCI's aversion to publicizing avoidable carcinogens has even gone as far as suppression and denial, Epstein said, quoting the following examples:

"In 1983, the Department of Health and Human Services directed NCI to investigate the risks of thyroid cancer from I-131 radioactive fallout following atom bomb tests in Nevada in the late 1950s and early 1960s."

"NCI released its report in 1997, based on data which had been available for over fourteen years, predicting up to 210,000 thyroid cancers from radioactive fallout. These cancers, whose incidence has almost doubled since 1973, could have been readily prevented had the NCI warned the public in time and advised them to take thyroid medication."

"At a September 1999 hearing by the Senate Subcommittee of the Committee on Government Affairs, former Senator John Glenn (D-OH) charged that the NCI investigation was plagued by lack of public participation and openness. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) charged that NCI's conduct was a travesty."

[Just] as serious is NCI's frank suppression of information. At a 1996 San Francisco Town Hall Meeting on breast cancer, chaired by Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), former NCI director Richard Klausner insisted that "low level diagnostic radiation does not demonstrate an increased risk." However, this was contrary to long-term studies on patients with spinal curvature (scoliosis), which showed that such radiation was responsible for 70% excess breast cancer mortality.

ACS has just as abysmal a track record on prevention as NCI, according to Epstein, and it has been and remains the target of periodic attacks by leading scientists and public interest groups.

One attack in a 1994 press release by the Center for Science in the Public Interest stated, "A group of 24 scientists charged that the ACS was doing little to protect the public from cancer-causing chemicals in the environment and workplace. The scientists urged ACS to revamp its policies and to emphasize prevention in its lobbying and educational campaigns."

The scientists criticized ACS for requiring human evidence of carcinogenic effects before implementing regulation, saying that they had an unrealistically high action threshold. The scientists included: Harvard University Nobel Laureates Matthew Meselson and George Wald; former Occupational Safety and Health Director Eula Bingham; and past president of the Public Health Association, Anthony Robbins.

One major instance of ACS ignoring the science, according to Epstein, was in 1993 when they came out in support of the pesticide industry just before the airing of the PBS Frontline special, "In Our Children's Food." ACS released a memorandum in which it trivialized pesticides as a cause of childhood cancers, and reassured the public that pesticide residues were safe, even for infants.

Possibly most shocking is the failure of the NCI and ACS to inform the public of the increasing incidence of childhood cancers, which has escalated to alarming rates, according to Epstein. The Cancer Prevention Coalition's 2003 report said that childhood cancers have increased by 32 percent between 1975 and 2000 and that cancer is one of the leading causes of death in children, second only to accidents.

Even more shocking, the NCI claims that "the causes of childhood cancer are largely unknown." This is diametrically opposed to substantial scientific evidence, according to Epstein, which shows that children are exposed to numerous avoidable carcinogens, including everything from X-rays, prescription drugs, pesticides and contaminants in beauty products to petrochemical and industrial pollutants, radioactive pollutants in the air and drinking water, and pollutants from hazardous waste sites.

In 2000, the industry publication Cancer Letter had a commentary on ACS' behind-the-scenes creation of a legislative committee to gain major control of national cancer policy, according to Epstein. In the commentary, former executive president of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists Dr. John Durant shared his assessment of ACS behavior.

"It has always seemed to me that was an issue of control by the ACS over the cancer agenda," Durant said. "They are protecting their own fundraising capacity [from competition by survivor groups.]"

Conflicts of Interest

But emphasis on treatment looks likely to remain if, as Epstein shows, the ACS and NCI are in bed with those who profit from a treatment focus.

Approximately half of the members of the ACS board are doctors and scientists with close ties to the NCI, Epstein said. Many of the board members and their colleagues obtain funding from both the ACS and NCI, he said. Frank conflicts of interest are evident in many ACS priorities, according to Epstein, including the two major examples of mammography and cancer drugs.

"The ACS has close connections to the mammography industry," Epstein writes. "Five radiologists have served as ACS presidents, and in its every move, the ACS reflects the interests of the major manufacturers of mammogram machines and films ... In fact, if every woman followed the ACS and NCI mammography guidelines, the annual revenue to health care facilities would be a staggering $5 billion.

ACS promotion continues to lure women of all ages into mammography centers, leading them to believe that mammography is their best hope against breast cancer. A leading Massachusetts newspaper featured a photograph of two women in their twenties in an ACS advertisement that promised early detection results in a cure "nearly 100 percent of the time."

An ACS communications director responded .... "The ad isn't based on a study. When you make an advertisement, you just say what you can to get women in the door. You exaggerate a point. Mammography today is a lucrative [and] highly competitive business."

"The ACS exposes premenopausal women to radiation hazards from mammography with little or no evidence of benefits," Epstein said. "The ACS also fails to tell them that their breasts will change so much over time that the 'baseline' images have little or no future relevance."

The cancer drug industry is even more lucrative than mammography with annual sales over $12 billion. The intimate association between ACS and the pharmaceutical industry is illustrated, Epstein said, by the unbridled aggression which ACS directs at its critics.

"ACS maintains a Committee on Unproven Methods of Cancer Management, which periodically reviews unorthodox or alternative therapies," Epstein wrote. "This committee is comprised of volunteer health care professionals, carefully selected proponents of orthodox, expensive, and usually toxic drugs patented by major pharmaceutical companies, and opponents of alternative or unproven therapies that are generally cheap, and minimally toxic."

Periodically, the committee updates its statements on unproven methods, which are then widely disseminated to clinicians, cheerleader science writers, and the public. Once a clinician or oncologist becomes associated with unproven methods, he or she is blackmailed by the cancer establishment. Funding for the accused quack becomes inaccessible, followed by systematic harassment.

"The highly biased ACS witch-hunts against alternative practitioners are in striking contrast to its extravagant and uncritical endorsement of conventional toxic chemotherapy. This despite the absence of any objective evidence of improved survival rates or reduced mortality following chemotherapy for all but some relatively rare cancers."

The cancer industry's favor of pharmaceutical products is evidenced, Epstein said, "by the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved approximately 40 patented drugs for cancer treatment, while it has yet to approve a single nonpatented alternative drug."

According to Epstein, "Dr. Samuel Broder, NCI director from 1989 to 1995, frankly admitted, in a 1998 Washington Post interview, that 'the NCI has become what amounts to a government pharmaceutical company.' Taxpayers have funded R & D and expensive clinical trials for over two-thirds of cancer drugs on the market. These drugs are given, with exclusive rights, to the industry, which sells them at inflated prices."

Epstein calls for change

NCI reform is two decades overdue, Epstein wrote, based in part on "The Stop Cancer Before it Starts Campaign: How to win the Losing War against Cancer," which is a 2003 report sponsored by eight leading cancer prevention experts and endorsed by over one hundred activists and citizen groups.

Numerous NCI reforms were proposed in 1992 at a Cancer Prevention Coalition press conference, a group of 68 leading cancer prevention and public health experts, past directors of federal agencies, and citizen activists across the nation. But prophetically, the press release concluded, "There is no likelihood that such reforms will be implemented without legislative action."

And the ACS has done no better, according to Epstein.

"The verdict is unassailable," Epstein said. "The ACS bears a major decades-long responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer. Reforming the ACS is, in principle, relatively easy and directly achievable. Boycott the ACS. Instead, give your charitable contributions to public interest and environmental groups involved in cancer prevention. Such a boycott is well overdue and will send the only message this charity can no longer ignore."

Having changed little over the last 250 million years, these arthropods are frequent visitors to our shorelines. The Connecticut Audubon Society is a conservation organization that provides environmental education and outdoor activities here at its Coastal Center. This is a picturesque and peaceful place where visitors can climb up the spiral stairs of an observation deck to view birds soaring in the sky or having lunch in a bird feeder. Visitors can walk along a boardwalk toward the water to take photographs of birds, butterflies and plant life. Birthday parties can also be held at the center. HARTFORD — In what is billed as his last appearance in the United States, South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu on Friday will kick off the World Youth Peace Summit in Hartford.

At a press conference on Thursday at the Hilton Hotel, Tutu urged young people to keep their zest for life and humanity.

“Don’t let others hinder your enthusiasms… Do all the things you want to do. Dream. Go on dreaming,” said the 1986 Nobel laureate.

Tutu’s inspirational message set the tone for his speech at the XL Center on Friday and a peace march on Saturday from West Hartford to Hartford. Tutu will serve as Grand Marshal of the Summit walks. This event will kick of the Peace Summit, which is aimed at developing scholar athletes and scholar artists from around the world into successful peace advocates.

The scholar-athlete games are expected to draw 2,500 teenagers from around the world between July 1 and July 4. Games will include baseball, basketball, chess, golf, field hockey, sailing, crew, wrestling, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, squash, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

Others speakers included former Vice President Al Gore and retired Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell.

I have been a fan of Roberts work for many years and am thrilled at the opportunity to have him speak to Milford and surrounding cities.

ECC members are ready for a change and the timing has never been better for a presentation on the benefits of Smart Growth. Many organizations will be supporting and attending this event because we all want to improve the sustainability of our transportation systems in and around our cities. Progress should enrich communities and not engulf them. Come find out how Smart Growth can benefit our cities and enhance local economic growth. Who wouldn’t want to live in a cleaner city that makes you feel healthier? Smart Growth reduces air pollution, water pollution and even encourages brown field remediation and reuse. I love the emphasis on preserving natural lands. Tuscany is an wonderful example of a city where local food production enhances it’s beauty and sustainability. The environmental quality of a city is affected by development practices and patterns. Smart Growth examines those patterns and then makes getting around more efficient and sustainable. Separating land uses spreads development out and creates a greater reliance on motor vehicles because little public transportation ever serves these areas. As development spreads people are forced to drive further and further. Come discover how Smart growth practices can shorten these trips thereby reducing the environmental impacts of development. Neighborhoods where land uses are mixed and streets are better connected increase pedestrians and bicycle use. People enjoy being able to leave their car home because travel is easy and convenient. Come ask how Smart Growth approaches that combine policies and programs can deliver even greater benefits.

Milford ECC will be holding a plant swap in June. It's a great way to share extra seeds, if you buy 6 tomatoes share one, digging up perennials share some. Mothers day bulbs can be donated to beautify the city. Drop off bin is located at 17 Devol Street, Milford CT. A Blue Recycling bin will be located behind the bushes just toss them in.

Hands Across the Sand is an international grassroots event that brings people together to oppose new offshore oil drilling, and promote a clean energy future that will help end our dependence on fossil fuels.

The premise of the event is very simple: on June 25 at 11:45am local time people will join hands for 15 minutes on beaches around the world to to champion clean energy solutions to our filthy fuels problem.

Learn From local Green Gourmets How To Eat Better and Spend Less By Jeanette Dias
If you peered into my pantry four years ago, you would have found a mini supermarket of pretty much every processed food there was out there. We’re talking every kind of sugar, carbohydrate, and protein in a dried or canned form. I cooked pretty much everything to death. It tasted good, so there were no real nutrition. I did have a variety of fruits and vegetables on hand, but none were organic, as I feared it would bust my budget.
Today, the contents of my pantry and fridge do me proud. All of the fruits, vegetables, and meat I buy are 100% organic. Fish, which we eat once a week, is wild caught. Juice is made at home, and all beans and lentils are bought dry, for the opportunity to sprout them first. I try to purchase food as raw as I can possibly get it. We love dairy but not how the animals or their milk are treated, so we pick our sources very carefully and enjoy it in very small amounts. The best part is I spend about the same as I did four years ago, but now I’m also buying chlorine-free diapers, and we have increased to a family of six.
Why the drastic change, and how did we undertake it? My children were beginning to suffer from problems like eczema, food allergies, or sleep apnea. I was also suffering from terrible bouts of asthma while pregnant with our fourth child. So I ransacked the Milford Public Library for any information I could find on allergies and asthma. It’s amazing how much you can learn from your local library. My favorite was the documentary section. That’s where I learned about pesticides, hormones, and GMOs. Soon afterwards, I was introduced to an extremely enlightening individual who taught me to live a more holistic lifestyle. My husband didn’t think much of it at first, but, after seeing my asthma come under control, he became much more supportive.
Since then we’ve taken some big leaps and had some great successes. We only use environmentally friendly cleaning products; our lawn has been maintained 100% organic since 2009, and we consume a lot more organic raw foods. In fact our favorite way of eating greens is in smoothies. Spinach, dates, mango, coconut milk, and water all blended up tastes amazingly delicious and incredibly nutritious.
I love how supportive my family has become. Even when it looks green and has lumps in it, they first try it before passing judgment. Through trial and error, we’ve compiled some great recipes and would love to share them with you. Ann Berman, Chair of Freedom Lawn, has been kind enough to offer her home as the meeting venue for our Green Gourmet Potluck and Recipes Exchange. The Potluck will be at 1:00pm on May 7 at 77 Pelham Street in Milford. Please RSVP to DD Vasseur, Chair of the ECC, by leaving a message at 203-283-1441.

Leaders today in a wide range of industries, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, healthcare, and other areas are finding ways to apply the principles of lean as a means of producing goods and delivering services that creates value for the customer with the minimum amount of waste and the maximum degree of quality.

Improving the performance of office processes and service delivery is a critical key to how the City of Southlake keeps the focus on spending tax payer's money efficiently as well as keeping service delivery on focus with our customers needs. The most successful approach to the industrialization of office and service processes is Lean Thinking. The City of Southlake organization is undertaking a lean makeover by looking for new opportunities to create value for customers by removing waste from every process.

Where did Lean Thinking come from?
A lot of the main concepts were initially used by Henry Ford, who was the first person to integrate a complete assembly system, under what he called "flow production." After World War II, the Toyota Motor Company modified Ford's concepts and implemented them in their organization as a way to overcome its limited human, financial, and material resources. The Toyota Production System (or TPS), became one of the first management systems using lean principles to produce a wide variety of products with some of the fewest defects.

How does it work?
Utilizing Lean Thinking allows an organization to eliminate waste and dramatically improve process cycle time. Mapping out processes and determining the value stream helps us define the source of delays and holdups in order to reduce non-value added steps.

How has Southlake used Lean?
Southlake has used Lean Thinking in evaluating the following processes:

* Development review process
* Permitting process
* Annual budget process

It is our goal to evaluate at least one process using lean principles each year.

Jim Hartzfeld serves as Managing Director of InterfaceRAISE, a corporate consulting resource for Interface, Inc., created to educate others seeking to implement the necessary steps for becoming sustainable. For over a decade, serving as Senior Vice President of Interface Research Corporation and Vice President of Sustainable Strategy for InterfaceFLOR, Jim has been pursuing the objective of equipping others through education and knowledge to make sustainability understandable and accessible in the marketplace. Now leading the newly formed venture, InterfaceRAISE, Jim is formalizing the knowledge he has gleaned to bring the tools for technical and cultural transformation to other companies who are similarly motivated.

Liz Ogbu, Public Architecture

Liz Ogbu is Associate Design Director at Public Architecture, a national nonprofit that mobilizes designers to create positive social change. Her work with Public Architecture has won numerous local, national, and international design awards including the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction’s 2009 Global Innovation Prize for the Day Labor Station. Liz directs the organization’s public-interest design initiatives and consultancy practice, which creatively address critical environmental and social justice issues. Most recently, she served as principal investigator and project director for the “Design for Reuse Primer,” a USGBC-funded e-publication the profiles 15 inspiring and informative reuse case studies from across North America. She was selected as part of the inaugural class of "Green Giants" by Steelcase, Inc. for her work in promoting environmentally and socially sustainable design. Liz earned her Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College and Master of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.

Dan Phillips, The Phoenix Commotion

Dan Phillips is a designer and builder in Huntsville, Texas. In 1998, he and his wife, Marsha, started The Phoenix Commotion, a construction company that builds affordable houses from reclaimed and recycled materials. Their mission is to divert landfill waste while creating sustainable housing for single mothers, artists, and families with low incomes. The Phoenix Commotion keeps labor costs low while reclaiming human potential. They use an apprentice program to teach sustainable building skills to individuals that volunteer or intern on the Phoenix Commotion Crew. The houses are energy-efficient, cheap and satisfying to build -- and wildly, effervescently creative. To the Phillipses, any material used in enough multiples creates a beautiful pattern -- so Phoenix Commotion homes are covered and decorated with salvaged materials of many stripes. Homes are built in concert with their eventual owner, who contributes sweat equity and their own artistic flair.

Advanced Solar PV Design and Applications

Building upon the learning foundation of entry- level solar PV course work, this ten session advanced PV course provides additional hands-on learning opportunities in photovoltaic system design, integration, and installation techniques. Classroom discussions, project review and critiques will be accompanied by field explorations of several solar installations, along with the opportunity to participate in solar PV equipment installation at GWCC. Experienced contractors, inspection officials, plan checkers, architects, equipment specifiers, and design engineers are also encouraged to participate in this course to enhance their personal insight into solar PV topics.

GWCC is an approved NABCEP training facility. Course experience and skills practice will serve as an excellent review for workforce challenges and proficiency exams. Also, experienced PV installers, who fulfill attendance requirements and qualify by demonstrating skill and knowledge, MAY meet the requirements for registration for the June entry-level NABCEP exam.

Commercial Building Energy Efficiency through EPA’s Energy Star Program

The benefits and barriers to commercial building energy efficiency are covered in this course-- providing an in-depth look at EPA’s ENERGY STAR commercial buildings standards. Topics include current trends in commercial building energy efficiency including; transforming the market with ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy management, rating building energy efficiency with Portfolio Manager, employing best commercial building energy efficiency practices, engaging employees in energy conservation, and tracking energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions over time. This course includes “hands-on” learning opportunities such as measuring the energy use of an actual building and identifying and finding solutions to energy efficiency opportunities. Students who take this course will receive a certificate of completion by exam.

Geothermal Energy Systems: An Introduction

Geothermal systems represent one of the most natural and efficient residential heating and cooling systems in use today. The earth’s subsurface only four feet underground provides a relatively constant source of heat for the winter and cooling for the summer. Ground source heat pumps offer great benefits by combining heating, cooling, and hot water systems, potentially saving 50% or more on heating and hot water costs and 20-50% reductions and more in energy consumption and maintenance. Geothermal technologies represent a major opportunity for reducing national energy use and pollution, while delivering comfort, reliability and savings to homeowners. In this class you will learn the fundamentals of sizing and costing a geothermal system for your own home or business, including substantial incentives and rebates.

Instructor Peter Governale is certified by the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association as an installer/designer, and inspects new geothermal installations for the State of CT and the CT Clean Energy Fund.

Efficiency First Part 1: Applications in Home Performance Contracting

Home Performance is where the growth is in the residential construction industry. For centuries, homes have been treated as a collection of parts. A Home Performance contractor is trained to treat all of the components of a home as interconnected systems. Issues including efficiency, comfort, safety and durability are addressed. This course is designed for those with mid-career level experience in the residential building/remodeling industry. Current building performance energy analysts and certified Building Performance Institute program graduates will find this program beneficial to bring them to the next level in their careers.

Actual problems and solutions will be tackled, employing the skilled use of diagnostic tools, the accurate completion of audit forms, and the effective use of energy modeling software. The core concepts of Building Science will be explored employing quantitative measurement protocols for building airflow and leakage, and effective selection and installation of insulation. Energy Star home construction will be discussed as well as the factors that can make an existing home Energy Star compliant.

The alignment of pressure and thermal boundaries, a requirement for a highly energy efficient homes, moisture control, controlled airflow for the home, infrared imaging, energy conversion factors, and many other operational issues will be covered. Students are encouraged to bring to class real problems to be discussed and solved. Site visits will be scheduled to address problem resolution scenarios.

Grid-Free PV: Solar PV Battery Systems: Installation, Operations, and Repair

Look beyond simple “grid-tied” PV and still feed power to critical appliances when the electric utility is not available. In this four-session, advanced PV short course, you will learn about using solar charged battery technology for communications, outdoor signs and lighting, and stand-alone solar electric installations. A hands-on learning emphasis will be applied to installations, start-up tests, troubleshooting techniques, and workplace safety.

Those with some experience in previous solar PV classes, homeowners interested in small PV applications, and those in the PV industry seeking a more detailed understanding of grid-tied battery-based installations will benefit from taking this course. The comprehensive presentation of battery systems will provide greater understanding and better prepare those who seek to take NABCEP exams.

Instructor Gail Burrington is a NABCEP-certified PV Installer and the proprietor of Burrington’s Solar Edge. She is a specialist in small wind electrical systems, solar thermal and photovoltaic installations and their standards within the National Electrical Code.

The recession has caused sweeping changes in the structure of the American family. The disproportionate number of men being laid off is redefining gender roles and relationships at home in ways not seen since the Great Depression. A recent Pew Research Study reveals that Americans are split on their feelings about these changes which have unfolded over the past half century. We'll talk with the director of the Connecticut Commission on Children which has launched initiatives like "Children and the Recession Task Force" and the 2011 Connecticut Fatherhood Initiative to learn the local effects of the recession. And we'll hear from parents about how they are coping with these shifting roles and responsibilities. And we'll hear from you!

Across the country, millions are still unemployed...and they're not just older workers who've been laid off. The most recent government report says 18% of 16- to 24-year-olds don't have jobs. Recently on the show we talked about "emerging adulthood" -- the phenomenon of young people postponing marriage and parenthood until at least their late twenties, and spending lots of time in self-focused exploration. Today we'll follow up that conversation talking about recent college grads that may not have the safety net that allows them to explore during those "emerging years." If you're fresh out of college and have to get a job -- what's the outlook? We'll find out.

Dan Esty is the new head of the Department of Environmental Protection -- and if Governor Dannel Malloy gets his way, that job will grow to include "Energy" in the title. Esty is a Yale professor who's advised President Obama on energy policy, and several corporations on how to "go green." Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) Is Seeking New Members for its Community Advisory Board (CAB)

As Connecticut's public broadcasting network, CPBN's mission is to serve its diverse audiences as effectively as possible. The Community Advisory Board (CAB) is designed to represent the interests of CPBN's viewers and listeners, and to communicate those interests.
The CAB is an autonomous body that operates independently from CPBN station management. Members act as representatives, helping to express the needs and opinions of CPTV's viewers and WNPR's listeners. The CAB holds regular public meetings, and receives updates on the various productions, program development plans, and outreach projects being undertaken by the station.The CAB is able to review these plans and advise the company accordingly, based on input from the community.

Some of the projects currently undertaken by the CAB include:

* CPTV Archive Project - assisting the Programming department in cataloguing legacy material
* ITVS Cinema - conducting screenings of independent films
* Focus group discussions around specific documentaries

Wolfram Koessel is cellist of the acclaimed American String Quartet. Prior to joining the quartet Mr. Koessel performed as soloist and chamber musician in concert halls throughout the world since his critically acclaimed concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1994. Based in New York City, he appears with a wide range of ensembles, most notably the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He performs on stage with the Mark Morris Dance Group and is now its music coordinator. In addition he has appeared with the Paul Taylor Dance Company during its season at the New York City Center. As a soloist, Mr. Koessel has performed with the Jupiter Symphony, New York Metamorphoses Orchestra, which he co-founded in 1994, the Mannes Orchestra, the symphony orchestras of Cordoba, Mendoza, Costa Rica and Stuttgart. Mr. Koessel is on the faculty of the New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program and served until recently as cellist with the award-winning Meridian String Quartet. His performance of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations was featured on WQXR’s Young Artists Showcase. Upon completion of his Master’s Degree at the Mannes College of Music, he was given the George and Elizabeth Gregory Award for Excellence in Performance. He also runs a weekly chamber music series on City Island called “Sundays on the Island."

(Richard Dyer, Boston Globe) Mr. Muraco has earned such accolades through a combination of technical virtuosity, tonal beauty, and a unique understanding of the underlying poetry of music. His performances in major concert halls throughout the United States, Canada, Central America, Europe, and Asia reflect his command of a repertoire remarkable for its complete range of musical styles, periods and forms. He has been praised for his insightful interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms, Wolf, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Poulenc, and premieres of William Schuman and George Perle. Highlights of his career include appearances at The White House, the Library of Congress, the Aspen, Banff, Bermuda, Casals, Cincinnati May and Ravinia Festivals, and on recital series at New York's major concert halls and at museums, universities and cultural centers throughout the US, Europe and Asia. Tom Muraco is presently on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. There he trains pianists in the art of accompanying and coaching, as well as singers in all aspects of the art. He has taught master classes for pianists and singers at the Aspen and Banff Music Festivals and the St. Louis Conservatory. Kathy Shandling— holds an MSc Economics (political economics) from The London School of Economics and a BA from Wellesley College. She is the Executive Director of the International Private Water Association (IPWA) – a global advocacy/non-profit organization that serves as a conduit between the public and private sector players involved in the water/wastewater infrastructure project and service arena. IPWA specifically promotes the implementation of public-private partnerships, the development/use of long-term sustainable financing tools, and the creation of project development facilities that assist in the viable structuring of bankable water utilities/water projects. Ms. Shandling was instrumental in launching the IPWA Financial Tools Taskforce which has been steadfast in its support of evolving sustainable local currency financing initiatives for the funding of water/wastewater infrastructure projects in developing countries as well as the implementation of new funding instruments to address the growing infrastructure refurbishment requirements in the Middle Income and OECD-member countries.

Milford, CT. Wild Expressions, one of Milford's most respected and highly recommended florists, and Collected Stories Bookstore of Walnut Beach will be hosting a local authors and artists weekend on Saturday and Sunday March 26th and 27th at their store in Walnut Beach.

BRIDGEPORT -- A group of environmental activists from Greenpeace unveiled a 20 by 40 foot banner on the coal elevator at the Bridgeport Harbor Generating Station Thursday morning to raise awareness of a campaign to end the reliance on dirty coal.

Five activists -- Aliyah Field, John Deans, Chandler McGaw, Lauren Thorpe and Nicholas Simmons -- were arrested, according to Molly Dorozenski, a Greenpeace spokesperson. It is unknown what the five are being charged with.

Bridgeport police, harbor patrol and the Coast Guard are investigating.

The sign read "Shut it down -- Quit coal." The well-orchestrated demonstration was part of Greenpeace's Coal Free Tour that is raising awareness through protests around the country. The activists used at least one boat to gain access to the site.

Bridgeport police quickly arrived at the protest and detained a number of activists, according to police radio transmissions. The activists used at least one boat to gain access to the restricted site.

The 529-megawatt generating station is operated by Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG). The plant that has about 125 employees, was constructed in stages between 1961 through 1968. Its red and white smokestack has become a landmark of sorts seen by thousands traveling on I-95.

Most of the coal that it burns is imported from Indonesia. PSEG operates 19 power plants, mostly on the East Coast and it's headquartered in Newark, N.J.

Two of the company's plants are in Connecticut, one is in Albany, N.Y., two are in Pennsylvania, two are in Texas and the remainder are in New Jersey. It also operates two nuclear plants in New Jersey.

The plant was owned by United Illuminating until 2000, when it was sold to PSEG.

A PSEG power spokesman said the plant emits 1,273 tons of toxic sulfur dioxide, 951 tons of nitrous oxide and 1.45 pounds of mercury annually.

Robert Gardner, a member of the group who is on the scene, said the banner was unveiled successfully around 7:30 a.m. According to Gardner, the activists have been interacting "cordially" with workers and security on the site. They plan to leave the banner hanging for the next few hours, as long as it is safe. Gardner said the wind will be a determining factor, as well as the wishes of authorities.

"Bridgeport residents have lived in the shadow of this coal plant for far too long. Clean energy, efficiency and common sense policies will let the citizens of Fairfield County breathe free as well as create sustainable green jobs for generations to come," said Gardner.

"Breathing clean air and living in a safe environment should be a basic human right, not a privilege reserved for those who don't live near a coal plant. The time has come to take action to expose this injustice, shut down this plant, and demand better for the people of Bridgeport ," said activist Lauren Thorpe in a statement released prior to the unveiling of the banner. Thorpe was one of the activists who climbed the elevator and was arrested.
